Johns Island - Doris Buckner Fowler Hardy, age 93, entered into rest Saturday, February 16, 2019. Mrs. Hardy was born in Ridgeland, SC, to parents Guy L. and Rosa Nettles Buckner. At the age of 3 they relocated to Johns Island, SC, were she attended and graduated from St. Johns High School. After graduation, she was employed at the Charleston Naval Base and Rodenberg Grocery. She was a longtime member of the Johns Island Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the Choir from the age of 13 until the age of 90. As an active member, she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Director, and President of the Women of The Church. She also served several years on the Church Session as an Elder and was given the status of Elder Emeritus. Mrs. Hardy received an Associate Degree in Business from Palmer Business College. Before retirement, she was employed as Secretary to the St. Johns Schools Principal before becoming the Secretary to the Charleston County School District 8 and 9 Superintendent. As a member of the Charleston County School District Support Association and the Charleston County Business and Professional Women, she was recognized and awarded for many contributions. For many decades, her love for the schools was shared as a Room Mother for twelve years and as PTA President. Many students benefited from the endless support and countless hours of volunteer work for the Band program and the Athletic Program. Known as an avid gardener, she shared the produce with many in need. Designing and sewing clothing, reading books and traveling were her passion. Mrs. Hardy is survived by daughter, Katherine Brooks Bryant, and husband, Robert, of Aiken, SC; stepsons, John Wayne Hardy and Richard Hardy of Jacksonville, FL; stepdaughter, Pamela Moffit, and husband, Robert, of Toledo, OH; grandsons, Brandon H. Brooks of Georgetown, KY, Bobbie Moffit of Toledo, OH; granddaughters, Rebecca Funderburk, and husband, Karl, of Lexington, SC, Missy Hawks of Toledo, OH; great-grandchildren, Blake Brooks and Hunter Brooks of Georgetown, KY, Jarred Funderburk of Lexington, SC, and Logan Hawks of Toledo, OH; brothers, Guy L. Buckner of Johns Island, SC, and David A. Buckner, and wife, Pat, of Ravenel, SC; many special nieces, nephews and several cousins. Preceded in death by her parents, Guy L. Buckner Sr. and wife, Rosa; husband, Jasper W. Fowler; husband, William D. Hardy; sister, Gloria Jean Buckner; brother, Donald Buckner; and son-in-law, Chris E. Brooks. Visitation will be Friday, February 22nd, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston, SC. A Celebration of Life Service will be February 23rd 11:00 a.m. at Johns Island Presbyterian Church, 2550 Bohicket Road, Johns Island, SC. Burial will follow immediately after the service in the Church Cemetery. A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.
