LEILA CAROLYN MCELVEEN KELLY, 86, of Friendswood, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2019. Carolyn was born on August 15, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia to parents Davant and Gladys McElveen.Carolyn was raised in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Brown High School in 1950 where she played tennis and excelled academically. She attended Agnes Scott University and Mercer University, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1954 with a major in English and a minor in French. She met the love of her life Bill Kelly on a blind date in 1950 and they were married five years later on June 25, 1955. After a short-time of military life, they settled in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1956. Bill and Carolyn later moved to Friendswood, Texas in 1964 and joined the Friendswood United Methodist Church where they are still members. Together they raised three daughters and enjoyed their eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Carolyn was a high school English teacher in Pearland and after that substituted often in Friendswood schools. Her passion for writing led her to a career in journalism where she worked as a reporter for the Friendswood News. She enjoyed her social column, “People in the News” and not surprisingly her family and friends made her column often. In 1982, she embarked on a new career in real estate, where she worked over 30 years at O’Farrell Realty. She won several awards in her successful career as a real estate agent winning O’Farrell’s Top Listing Agent in 1992, 1993 and won the Company “Spirit Award” in 1996. She dearly loved her O’Farrell Real Estate Family. She had many cherished roles including that of wife, mother and grandmother.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents. She leaves behind her husband of 63 years, William (Bill) R. Kelly and her sister, Martha Ezzard. Her three daughters, Martha (Marty) Katherine Johnson and her husband Bubba, Linda Caroline Ratcliff and her husband Brent, and Stacey Lynne White and her husband Brett. Her eight grandchildren, Blake Johnson and his wife Lauren, Kyle Johnson and his wife Lauren, Reagan Ratcliff and his wife Kacey, Zach Ratcliff and his wife Kelly, Hunter Ratcliff and his fiancé Audrye, Kelly Ratcliff and her fiancé Micah, Cameron White and his wife Stacey, and Chase White and his fiancé Sierra. Her great grandchildren, Bennett Johnson, Penny Johnson, Asher Ratcliff, Ruth Ratcliff, and Piper Ratcliff.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Alecia Asher, Belma Cuellar and Maria Ramirez for the special loving care and attention that they gave her these last few years.

Viewing and Funeral services will be held at Friendswood United Methodist Church, 110 N. Friendswood Dr, Friendswood, Texas 77546, with Rev. Jim Bass officiating. The viewing will be from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm and the Funeral Services will begin at 3:00 pm with reception to follow at the Church in Wesley Hall. A private burial will be held at a later date. Pallbearers will be her eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Friendswood United Methodist Church, 110 N. Friendswood Dr, Friendswood, Texas 77546.
