Charles Henry Couilliard was the son of Charles Osborn Couilliard and his first wife, Mary Ellen McGovern Couilliard.

He was named for his grandfather, Charles Henry Couilliard, who was also a Corporal, in the Civil War.

Charles married Margaret Shay, daughter of Patrick Shay and his wife, Cordelia Currier Shay, on May 26, 1909 in Haverhill, Mass.
