At Mt. Diablo Medical Center in Concord on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 from pneumonia after battling Alzheimer's for 10 years.

George was born in Lawler, MN, the son of the late Hjalmer and Aina Airaksinen. He served in the Merchant Marines and then spent 42 years with Greyhound Bus Lines as a diesel mechanic.

George's hobbies included golf, fishing and bowling. He had a special talent as a handyman. A 32-year resident of Concord, aged 83 years.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Merlin Jane Airaksinen (Sanderson) of Concord, daughters, Beverly Dykman of Washington, Susan Figgatt of Rio Vista, and Judy Airaksinen of Danville, son, David Airaksinen of Concord, brother, Wilford Airaksinen of El Dorado Hills, CA, and sister, Doris Gordon of Baltimore, MD. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave., Walnut Creek on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at 3pm.
