A month ago I read this thread with great interest because my grandmother too had much in common with other posters' ancestors: cremated in 1959 by Armstrong Family Mortuary, Los Angeles; buried in Restland Memorial Park, Hollywood CA. Not a trace of her since (info came from the Memorial Service Card). While on a family vacation in LA last month, we did a little sleuthing and I am happy to report that I have some new information to add regarding the elusive Restland Memorial Park that I hope will help others. We did eventually find Grandmother--but it took several phone calls, on-site visits to 2 cemeteries and a fantastic stroke of luck to find her. I googled Armstrong Family Mortuary and discovered it is still in business. The president, Mr. Robert Armstrong, very kindly told me what he knew generally of what might have happened in 1959 to cremated clients. He thought that Restland Memorial Park used to be in Burbank and was bought by Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park (address now North Hollywood) and was now a section located within Valhalla Cemetery. We phoned but of course no one called me back. We happened to be nearby on our last day in town so stopped in personally. The helpful young man at the desk looked up my grandmother and could not find her. He suggested I write for her death certificate that might give more burial details. And here is where the great stroke of luck came in--he kindly offered to look in the records one more time just to make sure he didn't miss anything. When he came back to the desk, he had with him an older woman who had been with the cemetery for 30 years! She had the key to the mystery of Restland Memorial Park! I think these are the basic facts--she was busy and did not really want to answer all my questions in detail but this is the gist of it. Restland was not a cemetery but a crematorium. They cremated remains for several different LA area cemeteries. It was not clear if Valhalla took over the crematorium or not, but THEIR OFFICE HAS A BOOK which lists where the ashes were sent after cremation at Restland. In the case of my grandmother, her remains went to Hollywood Forever Cemetery, about 10 miles away. Your ancestors' remains may be elsewhere. The key is the BOOK, which only the older experienced employees know about. The young man at the desk had no idea about the book. So we trekked over to Hollywood Forever, and she is there! Given the commonalities of the facts of our "missing" ancestors, I can only speculate that for some brief time in 1959, Armstrong Family Mortuary had a stock Memorial Program form they used that erroneously listed Restland Memorial Park as the final resting place for the deceased remains, when in fact, they ended up elsewhere. In our case, shortly after my grandmother's death, all living relatives left LA so the "secret" of her true location was lost (until now!). I hope this story helps others find their ancestors. Please post a reply if you find it helpful.

I need to send you a big THANK YOU! Two days ago, as you suggested, I called Pierce Brothers Valhalla and spoke with a receptionist (Heather) who kindly looked for my ancestor in the section that used to be Restland. Of course, she found nothing. I mentioned that I had heard of a long-time employee who knew of a special book listing where cremated remains were sent on to in 1959. Heather did not know of this book, but she knew who this long time employee was. Unfortunately, she was not in. So I left my name and number, and the name of who I was searching for and death date. I was very pleasantly surprised yesterday when this certain employee named Nicole returned my call and told me that my great-grandfather's ashes had been sent on Rosedale Cemetery and the date. Then she said she could look up the phone numbers for me, and this morning, she called again with the phone numbers. I quizzed her about other information in this book, to which her reply was that each entry only gets one line - stating birth date, death date, name, and where the ashes were sent on to. I told her what a treasure this book is for those of us in this situation and she agreed, they are very lucky to have it. So as of yet I have not called the phone numbers she gave me, but I have had my call returned from Valhalla not once, but twice; and both employees were wonderful to deal with. Because I do not even live in the USA, there is no way I could have gone in person. So far, it appears I may find my great-grandfather after all! Similarly to your case, my great grandfather left his wife and 5 very young children in Canada to go to California due to health problems. Though he kept in touch with his children, he never did return, so the information had been lost as far as where his ashes ended up. Thanks again for your posting.

Hi! Great news! I think we have the answer! What you might want to do is call Pierce Brothers Valhalla and ask for a long-time employee named Nicole to check the book regarding cremated remains sent elsewhere in 1959. Check the posting by Margthecar and my reply to their post to see how this all played out. In my case, my ancestor ended up in Rosedale Cemetery, so says this book. Definitely worth checking, I had a great experience dealing with the kind people at Valhalla. I would be interested to know how it turns out for you...good luck!

It was first called Blessed Hope Cemetery and then it became Restland Memorial Park when Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park bought them out. Valhalla was right next to Restland and separated by a fence. Valhalla removed the fence and now it is all part of Vahalla Memorial which is located in North Hollywood, but half of cemetery is in Burbank.

I can confirm everything that's been said about Restland here. The cemetery originally had a Burbank address, but since has been bought out by adjacent Pierce Brothers Valhalla, and now operates as a section of their cemetery, and has their North Hollywood address. The Restland records for the years 1958/1959, for some reason, never were recorded with the county; the only records are those kept at Pierce Brothers Valhalla. Like the others on this thread, when I first called, the clerk knew nothing about the Restland records; I had to tell her that they had a book with the records. She still didn't know what I was talking about, so I told her there is an older French woman working there, named Nicholle, who knows about the book. She took a message and told me she would have Nicholle call me back. Nicholle called me later that day. I gave her my mother's information, and the next day she called back and told me where her ashes had been scattered. She was very helpful. Turns out her ashes were scattered on the Restland grounds near the Virgin Mary statue.
