Campbell Messenger was the son of Capt. David Messenger and Hannah Higley. He was born in Connecticut, probably Granby, on 31 Jul 1793. David Messenger's family was one of the founding pioneer families of Granville, Ohio. Campbell came with his parents and siblings in 1805 and they were part of a larger group that originated from Granville, Massachusetts and Granby, Connecticut. They formed in 1804 and called themselves the Licking Land Company.

Campbell Messenger and Charlotte Wilcox [b 22 Jul 1803, daughter of Joseph Wilcox and Mabel Carter] were married 20 Apr 1823 by Justice of the Peace Bancroft in Granville, Ohio. They had four children: Cynthia [1824]; Joseph [1825-1900]; Martha [1828] and Madison Campbell [1829-1863; #2988695 and #50337543]. Charlotte may have died in Harrison, Licking County, Ohio where they were living at that time.

Campbell married (2) Lydia Benham 16 Nov 1845 in Connecticut. He was 52 and she was 49. He apparently married her there and then brought her back to Ohio as he is living in Licking County in both the 1850 and 1860 census.

He is buried in the same plot with his parents. Second wife Lydia is buried in plot #426a in Old Colony Burying Ground.
