Louisa Nevins Miller died in the early morning hours of her birthday at her home in Pasadena, California, with her children around her. She was 92. Louisa grew up in Pasadena, the daughter of Katharine Tilt Nevins and Richard Nevins and the step-daughter of William Sutherland McCay. She was part of a large Pasadena family in which she had the good fortune to be nurtured in an interesting, diverse, culturally rich environment. She attended The Arroyo Seco School, Westridge School, and the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in journalism. She married her lifelong love Robert Patchen Miller, Jr. in 1946, and moved to Burnet, Texas, where Mr. Miller ran a family-owned mining company. During their years in Texas, Louisa and Bob had six children, made many lifelong friends, and enjoyed Texas Hill Country life. In 1965, they returned to Pasadena where Bob joined the management of the main family business, Southwestern Engineering Company. Bob and Louisa were soon involved in many diverse social, educational and philanthropic activities. They were members of All Saints Church where until recently Louisa drove herself to Sunday services. For over fifty years Louisa was an active member of the Diggers Garden Club and the Pasadena Art Alliance. Her greatest loves were her family, her many friends, her little dog Esme, and her garden. She was a great gardener, knew the botanical names of plants and was a devoted lover of trees. She loved music, played guitar and had a wonderful singing voice. An ardent reader, she was interested in and knowledgeable about art, music, architecture, history, politics and many other subjects. Louisa knew how to score a baseball game, and often could be heard throughout her house enthusiastically urging her beloved L.A. Dodgers on to victory. Louisa had a formidable memory of people and places. She befriended people of all ages, especially the children and grandchildren of friends of her own generation. She greeted everyone with a warm smile, was generous and open-hearted. Every morning Louisa went early to her garden to see what new bloom had appeared. She is survived by her sisters Katharine Nevins Schwarzenbach and Dorothy McCay Scully; her step-sister Priscilla Dunn Flynn; her children Louisa Macalester Miller, Helen Candler Miller, Robert Patchen Miller, III and his wife Sally Hathaway Miller and their children Calvin and Theo; Richard Nevins Miller and his children David, Sarah and Elizabeth; Joseph Edward Tilt Miller and his wife Alison Miller and their children Emily, Olivia, Louisa and Henry; Katharine Bass Miller and her children Sean and Louisa. She has five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be held at All Saints Church, Pasadena, at 11:00 am, June 14th. Memorials may be made to All Saints Church, Westridge School, and Families Forward Learning Center.
