Julie A. Anderson Mason, 81, of Berwick, under the care of Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice of Berwick, went to be with her Lord and Savior with her family by her side on Feb. 15, 2019. Julie was the daughter of the late Arthur and Julia Stuttler Anderson, Nanticoke.

Julie was born on April 7, 1937. She joined her two older sisters, the late Gertrude Steiner and late Ida Dungey. Julie moved to Berwick at the age of seven and attended Salem Elementary School. In her adolescence, she was a drum majorette and also attended Girl Scouts.

On Jan. 31, 1953, Julie married the love of her life, her husband, Raymond Mason Sr. Julie and Raymond spent just shy of 36 years together before Ray passed on Jan. 19, 1989. Ray and Julie enjoyed attending church together at Berwick Assembly of God and taking a leisurely Sunday drive together.

Family was everything to Julie. Most of her life, she spent her days caring for her husband and seven children. “Donny, Jimmy, Nancy, Linda, Buddy, David, Julie Anne” became a battle cry in her household. Some of Julie’s favorite times were taking her children to the beach in Ocean City, Md., with her sister, Ida, and sightseeing in Washington, D.C. Holidays were always special times, making family favorites like pumpkin roll and snicker doodles. Julie took on extra work to fill those seven stockings each Christmas. Knoebels was another family favorite destination. Julie loved to ride the Phoenix roller coaster, eating fish fry, and enjoyed ice cream from The Mill while watching the carousel. Julie also spent a lot of time in gym bleachers, stadium seats, and lawn chairs supporting her children and grandchildren in their various sports. She was everyone’s number one fan.

In 1987, Julie went into business with her son, Donny, and late daughter-in-law, Sandy. Starting at home and opening up a storefront in 1988 — Mason’s Monogram Service. Julie ran the store for three decades, retiring at the age of 80. To celebrate her 80th birthday and retirement, her family surprised her with a party where she was surrounded by about a hundred loved ones.

In 1995, Julie bought a cottage at Patterson Grove. She began refurbishing the tiny vacation home, bringing it to full glory nearly 20 years later. Her “sunflower cottage” was a place she loved to visit, spending time at church camp meetings, sharing meals at the boarding house, and rocking on the row of rockers with her dear friends.

Julie leaves an extensive legacy in her family lineage, something she was so proud of. She would tell anyone who would listen about her seven children, 18 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren: Raymond Mason Jr.; Jennifer, James, Chloe and Anthony Hyde; Pamela and daughter Alessandra Bennett; James Mason; Ryan, Heather, Tess and Rohn Mason; Rachel Mason; Nancy Varner; Derek, Danielle, and Gemma Varner and Leah Riley; Dustin, Jackie, and Janna Varner; Linda and Timothy Herring; T. Shawn Herring and Ali Wood; T. Steven, Christine, and Emma Herring; T. James and children, Amelia and Camden Herring; Benjamin and Michael Mason; David, Phyllis, Kathleen, and Brett Mason; Jillian Mason; Brianne Sykes and son David Rather; Julie and the Rev. Mark Thiboldeaux; Mark Jr., Kaelin, Paige, and Adam Thiboldeaux.

Julie also leaves behind many relatives and friends, all of whom meant the world to her. Finally, she leaves her four-legged baby boy, Benjie, a Yorkshire terrier.

Julie was an extraordinary woman — strong and sassy. She always had a story to share and loved to make people laugh. Her heart was generous and she cared deeply for those around her. Julie’s smile and spark will forever remain in our hearts.
