*Graduated from Northwestern University with a M.D. in 1891 - the only Black member of the graduating class.
*Upon last graduation, appointed House Physician of Providence Hospital in Chicago.
*First Black man to be appointed on the staff of the Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
*Appointed by the Secretary of the Interior as the Surgeon-in-Chief of Freedmen's Hospital in 1898 - succeeding noted Black physician and surgeon, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams.
*President of the National Medical Association from 1910-1911.
*Received honorary doctorate of medicine from his alma mater, Lincoln University, in 1929.

Married Namah Gertrude Sockum of San Francisco, California in 1888 in Camden, New Jersey by Rev. W. H. Burrell. Father of Arthur, Austin, Jr., Merrill, and Gertrude.
