Ulster King of Arms, 1853

Born John Bernard Burke, son of John Burke, author of A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the United Kingdom, in which he was succeeded as editor by his son Bernard.

John Bernard Burke was born on 5 January 1814. He was the son of John Burke and Mary O'Reilly. He married Barbara Frances MacEvoy, daughter of James MacEvoy and Theresa Meredyth, on 8 January 1856. He died on 12 December 1892 at age 78.
Sir John Bernard Burke usually went by his middle name of Bernard. He was a practising Barrister-at-law. He held the office of Ulster King of Arms between 1853 and 1892. He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1854. He edited the book The Peerage and Baronetage. He wrote the book Vicissitudes of Families. He edited the book The Landed Gentry of Ireland. A celebrated genealogist and prolific author. He wrote the book The Extinct and Dormant Peerage, published 1856.
He was Keeper of State Papers of Ireland between 1867 and 1892.
He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1868.
He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) He was Registrar and Knight attendant on the Order of St. Patrick.
He was a Member, Royal Irish Academy (M.R.I.A.)

Marriage.
John Bernard Burke and Barbara Frances McEvoy were married on 8 January 1856, at St. Andrew’s Church, Westland Row, Dublin.

Death.
John Bernard Burke, aged 80, a widower, Knight, Ulster King of Arms, died at his home Tullamaine Villa, Upper Leeson Street, Dublin, on 12 December 1892.
The cause of death was Progressive Paralysis, 3 years, Paralytic Stroke and Debility, 3 months, certified.
His death was registered on 19 December 1892, by Ashworth Burke, son, present at death, of The Castle, Dublin.

Funeral of Sir Bernard Burke, C.B.
Yesterday the remains of the late Sir Bernard Burke were removed from Tullamaine House, the late residence of the deceased, for interment in the family vault in Westland Row Roman Catholic Church. The large attendance of influential citizens testified to the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all classes. The Lord Lieutenant was represented by Captain Ridley, A.D.C. The funeral cortege left Tullamaine House at half-part nine o'clock, for Westland Row chapel. Here Mass was celebrated by Rev. William Murphy, C.C., and at the conclusion the coffin containing the remains was placed in the family vault.
The chief mourners were - Messrs. Henry Farnham Burke, Peter Aldworth Burke, Edward Plunkett Burke, John Burke and Arthur Burke (sons).

The Will (with one Codicil) of Sir John Bernard Burke, late of Tullamaine House, County Dublin, Ulster King-at-Arms, C.B., LL.D., who died 12th December 1892 at same place was proved at the Principal Registry by Henry Farnham Burke of the College of Arms, London, Somerset Herald, one of the Executors.
Effects: £2,234. 4s. 1d. Resworn at £2,559. 11s. 11d.
