My nephew Jeff aka Bodine

Jeffrey Scott Long "Jeff" age 48 of Canton, Georgia passed away on Monday, February 18th, 2019 at his home, in the arms of his loving family.

Jeff was born September 19, 1970, in Plymouth, Massachusetts into the loving arms of his parents, Joseph George Unick & Linda Sue (Hefner) Unick. A few years later he was adopted by his adoring step father Joseph Carroll Long.

He is cherished, loved and adored by his caring wife Stacy Lynn Bryant Long; mother Linda Scott; grandfather Ray Hefner "Pappy"; his three beautiful daughters Gabby Long Thomas (Tyler), Taylor Long Lathem (Miles) and Rachel Long; brother, Joey Unick (Patti), sister, Christy Stephenson (Shane); brother Chris Unick (Jessica); his three adorable grandsons Malcolm, Tayton & Waylon and lets not forget Breckyn due this summer; and his mother in law Carolyn Bryant. Also his best friend and side kick, Elmo, who never left his side.

He is forever loved by his aunts Nancy Balta, Bobbi Magee and his uncle Eddie Hefner (Linda). Also surviving are his beautiful nieces Shelby, Carly, Embree & Lily, nephews Austin & Ryan. As well as numerous cousins and extended family.

He is also survived by the mother of his children Tracy Pipher.

Jeff is predeceased by his fathers, Joseph George Unick & Joseph Carroll Long, as well as his step father Mike Scott. His beloved grandmother "Grammy" Rose Turner, who nicknamed him Jeffro Bodine (which bless his heart, he carried thru life). As well as his grandmother Glenda Hefner. Also three half brothers, Gary, Jerry & Joey Long.

A little boy with the sweetest smile, an Elvis smirk, with curly locks. He grown into a man with a Will of Iron, with the strongest determination to live for those he love. He would need that strong will and lust for life, to fight the disease that took he away from us, ALS.

On August 26, 2014 at the age of 44, Jeff was diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS. Devastated to hear this news, as he had always been healthy and very active. Fast forward two years from diagnosis...Jeff had lost the ability to speak. He was forced to communicate using an app on his smart phone. That didn't stop him from cracking jokes! Jeff is a big jokester and people person...so losing his voice was huge blow (as it would be to anyone). He had to have a Peg tube inserted at the end of 2016 due to the weakening of the muscles in his throat. He was constantly choking on his food and had began to lose weight.

As you know there is no cure currently for ALS. In February of 2017, Jeff made the decision to cash in a life insurance policy and head to northern California to see a neuro-degenerative disease specialist. He went through a detox protocal to prepare his body for embryonic stem cells that he would receive at a clinic in Ensenada, Mexico. Making the choice to try treatment out of the box...because the Emory Clinic, where Jeff received his diagnosis, offered no hope. Unfortunately after receiving the stem cells, Jeff's immune system hit rock bottom and he came down with pneumonia. It was a huge blow. He spent 2 weeks at the University of San Diego Hospital in ICU where he received a trach. He went on a vent at that time as well. The hospital didn't feel Jeff was up to making the trip home to Georgia after his two week stay in ICU so he was transferred to a transitional hospital in San Diego for a month and later sent to a ventilator unit in Miller County, Georgia for yet another month to allow time for rehab and for his wife to be properly trained on his trach care.

Before ALS, he loved fishing, working in his yard and watching Nascar. He never meet a stranger and made friends easily. He loved to laugh and was always a Jokester.

The one thing Jeff always wanted to accomplish, was to make his family proud of him. The dignity and courage he demonstrated was a testament to the love he had for his family. The strength he showed in facing and fighting ALS, is his legacy.

Jeff will be loved forever and never forgotten. Rest easy in the Arms of Angels, our Sweet Bodine.
