Elizabeth Jane Youngkin, Betty Jane, Betty, Mom was born on Christmas Eve 1923 in Houston Texas to Catherine Isabel & William Jennings Morrissey. Mom died February 13, 2019 so she could be with her husband P.I. on Valentines Day.

As a child she lived in Tampico Mexico where her father was wildcatting for oil with George W. Strake. Her father died in Mexico in 1925 and she moved with her mother Belle and little sister Billie back to Houston. In Houston they moved in with & were raised by her grandparents John T & Alma Jane Browne along with many aunts and uncles: Rie, Sister, Joe, Estelle, Mildred, Honey and Kid. Being around her extended family was a theme that would permeate the rest of her life.

Betty Jane attended St. Agnes Academy in Houston where she found life long friends & where her mother had been the salutatorian in 1920. After high school she was awarded a scholarship to study art at the Houston Museum of Fine Art.

In 1944 she moved by herself to San Fransisco to work at the City of Paris fashion house where she drew the ball gowns and wedding dresses for the newspaper ads. Betty then moved back to Houston to work at The Fashion as a commercial artist. Betty met Pershing Youngkin on a blind date arranged by her best friend and his best friend. They married in 1948 and lived in Austin Texas where he was attending the University of Texas and she worked as a fashion artist for Scarboroughs.

Mom then left her successful career to devote her life to raising a family while moving from Carrizozo New Mexico to Houston, to Alice to El Dorado to Snyder to Houston to Denver & back to Snyder. During this period Betty Jane transitioned into Artist in Residence at each of her children's schools. She became a pioneer in the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder & was head physical therapist for Clay Youngkin.

We all remember Mom as a gourmet cook. Four of her most famous dishes were Dirty Dishwater Meatloaf, Blue Scrambled Eggs, Spoiled Milk Creme Brûlée and a Mole dish that even the dogs wouldn't touch!

Mom always kept us close to the extended family that raised her. Her sister's family the Kacal's, her Aunts & Uncles the Brownes, the Traceys, the Brookings and Green & Estelle. Mom & Dad then retired and shifted gears to square dancing and she also returned to her art. They traveled to Australia, went 4 wheeling in Montana and cruised to Alaska. Being a good catholic, she traveled to Italy and in Milan demanded to see the Shroud of Turin even though it was locked away to protect if from the light. However, Mom's main focus in retirement was doing good deeds for others. They were active in their church (St. Catherine of Siena) and working with the St. Vincent De Paul Society to help those in need. They participated in prayer groups also. They moved to Denver for 8 weeks to help their son Rich when his wife was hospitalized during her pregnancy with Shelley.

After Dad died mom moved to Belmont Village in WestLake for assisted living & memory care. She had a great community of friends including Rosemary, Pat & Gloria her lunch mates. Mom loved her caregivers at Belmont and just like everyone else she met throughout her life, they loved her.

She leaves a large family behind who miss her greatly including: her son, Jeff & his wife JoAnne (Children: Terry, Clay & Amy), her daughter Paula & her husband Tom (Children: Carrie & Tom), her son, Richard & his wife Ginny (children: Erin & Shelley), son Clay & his wife Elizabeth, daughter Sara & her husband Paul (Children: Allie & Sarah). Also the Kacal, Browne, Tracey & Brooking families.

We want to give a special thanks to the staff at The Summit at Westlake, Accountable Aging, and Belmont Village whose support of mom in her final years was so appreciated.
