Jocelyn Lynn Bates was born to Lorraine and James Bates Sr. on February 21, 1957 in Saginaw, Michigan, the eighth child of 11 children and the mother of two sons. She passed away June 1, 2016 at her residence.
Jocelyn attended Jones Elementary, Central Junior High and Saginaw High School. After completing her GEC she graduated from Great Lakes Business School, retired from AT&T and at the time of her death was employed at Morley Company, Inc.
Jocelyn enjoyed people, she formed friendships from her elementary school days that have lasted until now! She never lost contact and if so, renewed those bonds. Jocelyn loved to laugh, either with you or at you, all in good humor. With that laughter came the talking. As a child her family and family friends called her "walkie-talkie". Jocelyn liked to cook and have family and friends over for meals. She was "the top chef" when it came to cooking tacos because she was the master. Her Seven-up Pound Cake was the best, a recipe she got from her sister Joan. Jocelyn was spiritual, and as a member of Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church she served on the Greeters Ministry, attended Bible Study and provided computer assistance when needed.
Jocelyn is survived by sons, Winfred Morgan Jr. and Corey (Tiombe) Morgan Sr.; three grandchildren, Arianna, Corey Jr., Taiesha and step-granddaughter Madison Morgan; siblings, Joyce Williams, Jeffrey Bates, Jacqueline (Thomas) Triplett, Jeraldine Burnell, Julia (Tonza) Price, Jeanetta Bates, John Bates and Jennifer Bates; nieces, Regina Ryan, Cynthia Wright, several cousins in Virginia, Pennsylvania and throughout the country; Jocelyn also leaves aunts, Marcene Ramsey and Fannie Bates; uncles, Walter Bates and Lawrence Davis; extended family members include Winfred Morgan Sr., Mrs. Bobbie Williams, Eloise Carter, Clyde Morgan Jr., Debra Brown, Ronald Morgan, former daughter-in-law, Keshia Beatty and former husband, Maurice Jackson.
