NEW LONDON - John D. "Buzz" Deacon, 79, of Highland Ridge, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at home.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Gould Road in New London.

The Rev. Cricket Cooper, rector, will be officiating.

Burial will be in Old Main Street Cemetery in New London.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New London Historical Society, P.O. Box 965, New London 03257; or to the Lake Sunapee Protective Association, P.O. Box 683, Sunapee 03782.

Chadwick Funeral Home in New London is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born in Newton, Mass., on Feb. 28, 1925, the son of Eugene N. and Effie (Cartledge) Deacon.

He spent his early years in Maplewood, N.J., and graduated from Blair Academy, Blairstown, N.J., in 1942.

Mr .Deacon served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was commissioned a second lieutenant stationed in Tientsin, China, until 1947.

After his service, he graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1949.

He began his career in sales, marketing and general management with Nestle Chocolate and Snow Crop Marketers prior to cofounding two businesses in the mid-fifties. One, Chase Foster, eventually became the laminates division of Bairnco Inc., a NYSE firm, and Buzz served as division president until his retirement in 1984.

Buzz and his wife of 55 years, Muriel (Howard) Deacon, were longtime residents of Westwood, Mass., where they raised their six children.

Members of his family surviving include Muriel, of New London; six children, John and Barbara Deacon of Rumford, R.I., Timothy Deacon of Norfolk, Mass., Dwight and Jennifer Deacon of Natick, Mass., Jeffrey and Catherine Deacon of Guilford, Conn., Ann O'Day of Williston Vt., and William and Heidi Deacon of New London; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Benjamin and Joan Deacon of Orlando, Fla., and Richard and Marjorie Deacon of Brielle, N.J.; a sister, Elizabeth Stevens of Lady Lake, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Deacon was an active participant in several volunteer and charitable organizations, including the Cub Scouts, Little League, the New London Historical Society, and the Lake Sunapee Protective Association, as well as a member of St Andrew's Episcopal Church.
