Formerly of Wilmington and Bethany Beach, Delaware, Earl A. Abrahamson (94) died on February 10, 2019 at his home in Brentwood, Tennessee after a short illness. Earl was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on June 5, 1924 to Earl A. C. and Selma (Locken) Abrahamson. He grew up in Mohall, North Dakota.
His parents; a sister, Margaret Richards; and his wife, Dorothy Bergesen Abrahamson, to whom he was married for 62 years, predeceased him. He is survived by three daughters: Kris Biesinger (Thomas) of Athens, GA; Jill Leyrer (Donal) of Brentwood, TN; and Kirsten Abrahamson of Summerville, SC; 7 grandchildren: Tait and Brett (Megan) Biesinger; Kelsey, Keegan, and Colleen Leyrer; Sylvia and Jack Robinson; and 2 great grandchildren: Bruce and Kate Biesinger. Additionally, he is survived by one sister, Sylvia Oie (Roger) of Sun City West, AZ.
Earl was a veteran having served in the US Army from 1943-1946. He attended St. Olaf College and was a graduate of the University of North Dakota and the University of Kansas, earning a PhD in chemistry. He retired from DuPont in 1985 after 34 years of service. Abrahamson was a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society, a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Sigma Xi, and AAAS professional societies. He was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon social fraternity, and Lafayette Lodge AF & AM.
While in Wilmington, Earl was an active member of the community. He served on the Skating Club of Wilmington Board of Directors, the Mount Pleasant School Board, the Delaware School Boards Association and the Church Council of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He was a long time member of the Sons of Norway and was active in Norwegian genealogical circles.
Earl will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He made a memorable impression on those he met with his humor, his intellect, his musical talents and his caring personality.
A celebration of Earl’s life to be held at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 908 Murfreesboro Road, Franklin, TN. He will be interred in the Columbarium at the church.
