Eloise Eagle Abernethy, 98, of Hickory passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019.
Born in Lincoln County, NC on August, 24, 1920, Eloise was the daughter of the late Martin Junius Eagle and Vera Roberts Eagle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Burwell Abernethy; her sister, Frances Eagle Willard; and her brother, H.K. Eagle.
Eloise was a member of First United Methodist Church. She graduated from Spencer High School in 1938 and attended Lees McRae Junior College in Banner Elk, NC (which is where she and Howard met). In more recent years she and Howard were both on the Board of Trustees at Lees McRae. They also started the craft sale which was held each summer during Alumni Week.
After attending Lees McRae, she did sporadic office and secretarial work prior to her marriage. She was a homemaker while the girls were young. One of her first jobs when entering the workforce was as a teacher assistant at the Opportunity School in Hickory. Later she worked in School Food Service for the Hickory City Schools. She was the Supervisor of this program when she retired. She was a member of the Adult Fellowship Class and of Circle #5 of the United Methodist Women at First United Methodist Church in Hickory. She received the UMW Special Missions Recognition award years ago. She was the bread maker for Communion and Bereavement meals at the church for many years. She and Howard were very instrumental in helping start Christ United Methodist Church in Mt. View (now known as Christ Church). She was a member of the Altrusa Club (past president) and a member of the Home Demonstration Club of Catawba County.
During her later years, one of her favorite activities was to knit dishcloths to give to her friends. She moved to Kingston Residence in Hickory 4 years ago and enjoyed being involved in their many activities.
Eloise is survived by two daughters, Pam Abernethy Parlier and husband Tim of Marietta, GA, and Donna Abernethy Waldron of Hickory, NC.
