His favorite break was the left at Wind'n Sea. Emery planned on opening a camp on Kauai for children without families.

Survivors include his parents, Cynthia Kauanui of La Jolla and Emery Kauanui Sr. of Kauai, Hawaii; brothers, Caleb Alimboyogan and Nigel Kauanui of La Jolla; and grandfather, James Haupt of Long Beach.

Services: 11 a.m. June 9, Coast Vineyard Church, San Diego French-American School, 6550 Soledad Mountain Road, La Jolla.

More than 300 surfers solemnly paddled out yesterday afternoon to a newly named wave break off Windansea Beach to pay tribute to one of their own.

Scattering of ashes: June 9, Windansea Beach, 6800 block of Neptune Place, La Jolla.

Cause of death: severe head injuries sustained from an altercation
