He was born in Floyd County on March 12, 1922, to John Thomas Helms and Annie Edith Jones Helms.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard Helms, Calvin Helms, and Dewey Wayne Helms.
Surviving is two sons: Robert Helms of Maryland and Van Helms of Baltimore; a daughter, Vicky H. Tutchton of Maryland; three grandchildren; a brother, William Bennett Helms of Maryland; and two sisters: Reva Knowles of Martinsville and Zettie Martin of Meadows of Dan.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Meadows of Dan with the Rev. Stewart Childress officiating.
Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of arrangements.
