JOSEPH A. BERNAUER, 85, of BELMAR, died Friday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He owned and operated the Bernauer Funeral Home, Newark, which was in the family for more than 100 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the Armed Forces during World War II. He graduated from St. Benedict's Prep, Newark, in 1933, where he was a member of the Alumni Association, and from Coleman's Business College. He was a communicant of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Newark, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Essex County Chapter; the VFW Hennessey Post 712, Newark; the Catholic War Veterans; the Frank Krug Association, Newark; and the National, New Jersey and Essex County Funeral Director's Associations. Born in Newark, he moved to Belmar in 1985.
He was predeceased by his parents, August L. and Christine Harburger Bernauer, and his stepmother, Ceil Belke Bernauer. Surviving are his wife, Rita Munsch Bernauer; a daughter, Rita Marie Dempsey of Pittsford, N.Y.; a brother, August L. of New Monmouth; a sister, Mildred Leber of Cherry Hill; four grandchildren, Christopher, Brian, Timothy and Jillian Dempsey; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reilly Funeral Home, Eighth Avenue and D. Street, Belmar, and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bernauer Funeral Home, 133 Niagara St. and Barbara Street, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict Church, Newark. Entombment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
