FUNERAL HELD TODAY
Funeral services were held today in the Bountiful Tabernacle for John H. Barlow, Sr., who died Sunday evening from injuries sustained that morning when a street car struck the automobile in which he was riding to conference with his son-in-law, Bishop Richard Stringham, wife and daughter, Mrs. Frank Hardy.
The speakers were, Jasper Hepworth, Joseph T. Mabey, Alma Hardy, Presidents, J. H. Robinson and E. B. Clark, L. J. Muir, Governor Mabey and D. R. Tolman.
There was a very large attendance and the floral offerings were very numerous and beautiful. A large number of automobiles formed the cortege that followed the remains to the Bountiful cemetery where interment took place.
The accident accured on First North street as the party were entering town on First west. One street car had just passed another was close behind but as the one that passed was the Centerville car and they are usually an hour apart, it never occurred to the Bishop that another car would be following and besides it was snowing so hard that it was impossible to see any distance ahead.
At conference time, two cars often follow each other only a short distance apart. When Bishop Stringham, who was driving, saw the car, he realized that he did not have time to get over the track so he attempted to turn along the side of the track hoping to be able to get far enough away to keep from being struck, this however, was not the case. The car crushed in the side of the auto and as Mr. Barlow was sitting on that side he was injured the most seriously of any the occupants of the machine.
Mrs. Richard Stringham and her daughter were taken to the hospital with four fractured ribs and the later was suffering from a fractured hip. Mrs. Hardy's injuries are feared to be the more serious of the two, however, they are both doing as well as could be expected. Mr. Stringham escaped serious injury was able to get around immediately after the accident. It was the Bishop's sedan and it was badly damaged.
The deceased was born in Nebraska, 74 years ago on the 27th of last January while his parents Mr. and Mrs. Israel Barlow were on their way here from their old home in Massachusetts. The family arrive in Salt Lake, one year after the original pioneers, Mr. Barlow being two months old upon reaching Utah. The family remained in Salt Lake about four years when they moved to West Bountiful, being among Davis County's first settlers.
Deceased is survived by a son, John H. Barlow, Jr., a daughter Mrs. Richard Stringham, and an adopted son, William Gierish, of Burley, also twenty-one grand children and six great great-grand children. Wife of the deceased, Mrs. Elizabeth Cook Barlow, died on the 17th of last January.
Forty-two years ago, he filled a mission in the southern states.
Mr. Barlow was a highly respected citizen and was widely known throughout the county and state. He was a very successful farmer and faithful church worker, being a member of the high priests quorum of the First ward at the time of his death.
