Gerrit J. Adema, 93, of New Era, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012 in Hart. He was born Aug. 25, 1918 in Grand Rapids to Rinse and Maggie (Vlasma) Adema.
He moved to New Era following the untimely deaths of his parents. Mr. Adema married Elizabeth Weesies May 29, 1941. She passed away Oct. 1, 2005. Mr. Adema was a World War II veteran, serving stateside in the Coastal Artillery in California.
He was a long-time member of the New Era Christian Reformed Church. Mr. Adema was employed by Brown Morris and Continental Motors for a short time before working at Hooker Chemical in Montague for many years. He also farmed for a time. He was a man who loved being in nature whenever possible enjoying God's creation.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Janet) Adema of Grand Blanc, Marianne (Tom) Blair of Manistee, Carol (John) Mogdis of Norton Shores and Winston (Diane) Adema of New Era; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a cousin, Elizabeth "Betty" Bishop, who was more a sister than a cousin; and brother-in-law, Edward (Anne) Weesies of Spring Lake. He also was preceded in death by his half sisters, Margaret and Effie and half-brother, Theodore.
Visitation will be Friday, March 16 from 11 a.m. to noon at New Era Christian Reformed Church in New Era. The funeral service will follow at the church at noon.
