Jet that crashed has troubled history
-The Navy begins investigating the FA-18 crash as family and friends mourn Salina pilot Jonathan Nolan.

Salina's Jonathan Nolan "wouldn't have lived any other way," one of his friends said Friday, remembering the selfless 28-year-old fighter pilot killed this week when his jet crashed in the Nevada desert.

As friends and family mourned, Navy officers began the lastest investigation into the crash of one of their prized FA-18 Hornets.

The Navy talks glowingly of the FA-18's performance int he 1986 strikes against Libya and of its role in the Persian Gulf War, when the jets completed missions even when hit by enemy fire.

But at least 53 Hornets flown by Navy or Marine pilots have gone down since 1992, and the General Accounting Office has advised against the purchase of a new fleet of even-larger FA-18s.

An FA-18 crash in February 1997 killed Syracuse native Danny A. D'Eredita, a Marine major, during routine training over the Yellow Sea.

This past February, two Marine Corps Hornets crashed over the Persian Gulf. In April, the Swiss Defense Ministry grounded its FA-18s after one crashed in the Swiss Alps. Switzerland is one of eight countries flying the plane.

There have been engine fires, jets twisting into the sea on takeoff from aircraft carriers, jets crashing into mountains and into each other, especially during night exercises. Data obtained Friday shows FA-18 accidents at the rate of one every seven weeks for the last five years.

Officers at the Navy's Office of Information on Friday said they were not prepared to discuss specifics of the jet's safety record.
