Dixie Brewer, 83 of Dumas, died Sunday, February 10, 2019. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 16, 2019, at 10:30 in the morning at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Anthony Inman, officiating. Burial will follow in Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.
Dixie Helen Timmis Brewer was born May 13, 1935, in Wynona, OK to Henry and Goldie (Bonner) Timmis. In her youth she was very active in 4-H Club work and her junior year in high school was a delegate to National 4-H Congress in Chicago. She graduated from Mound Valley, OK High School in 1953. After graduation she attended business school and worked as a private secretary in the R&D Department at Phillips in Bartlesville, OK. While there, she was a member of Phillips Water Ballet Team, and also played on their basketball and softball teams. In 1956 she earned her TWA Airline Hostess wings; this began her love for traveling. She met her brother who was stationed in the military in Germany. Together they traveled throughout Europe which was a very memorable time for her. On June 28, 1958, she married Edward Neil Brewer in Bartlesville, OK, and they honeymooned on the island of Bermuda. She moved to Dumas, TX, to join Ed and started a job at the smelter in Moore County. Later she became a part of the Human Resources Department at the Cactus Phillips Plant. With the arrival of her first of three daughters in 1961, she became dedicated to her family and spent time at home being a fabulous mother and homemaker. She spent countless hours supporting all of her daughters extra curricular activities. Throughout her years with Ed they traveled extensively in the United States. After their daughters were born, they enjoyed camping and annual summer vacations across the US. In 1972 the family spent a month in Mexico exploring with an RV caravan. They were very active in camping organizations and made life long friendships.
She filled her empty nest years first as an ESL teacher in the Dumas Schools and then as an office assistant at Green Acres Elementary School. Becoming a full time retiree in 1988, she and Ed spent many winters in Arizona, Nevada and the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Above all, her favorite job was being a grandmother, which brought her endless joy and amusement. She loved spending time her family.
Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Oney Timmis, and one son-in-law, Paul Lester.
She is survived by her three daughters and spouses: Debbie and Steve Runcie of Amarillo, Janet and David Brown of San Antonio, and Lori and Allan Gwyn of Amarillo; three grandchildren: Andrew Runcie and Misty of Amarillo, and Ben Brown and Bethany Brown of College Station, and George Morrel of Amarillo who provided endless companionship and was her last dance partner. She has many nieces, nephews and their families whom she loves and are very special to her.
