Boy out to do good deed killed by car - By Jerry Thornton - BOND WAS SET at $50,000 Friday for Elton Houston, 24, charged with reckless homicide in the traffic death of a Northwest Side teenage boy who was out to do a good deed when he was run over three times by a car. Police said Steven Calcagno, 13, of 5332 N. Lovejoy Av., had found a driver's license and was on his way to return it to its owner when he was struck by a car Thursday afternoon as he crossed North Central Avenue near his home. Police said Houston, driving north in the 5300 block of Central, pulled around the right side of a stopped truck and struck the boy. Houston, an Avon products supplier, told police he did not see the boy but heard a noise. So, he said, he stopped his car and backed up, inadvertently running over Steven as he lay on the pavement. He then pulled ahead and ran over the boy again. HE PARKED, called police, and waited for them to arrive. Police Sgt. Joseph DeLopez said Friday there was "no intent involved on the part of the driver. The circumstances are really unusual. He possibly became excited and nervous." Steven's father, Frank Calcagno, said his son, an 8th grader, was on the basketball team at St. Cornelius Elementary School, 5252 N. Long Av., and was active in Little League baseball. Associate Judge Joseph J. Urso, after setting bond, ordered a preliminary hearing for Houston in Violence Court Nov. 7.
