SALEM – Robert S. Hannay, age 92, died at 6:05 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring. He was born July 14, 1926 in Salem, the son of the late Frank and Helen Louise (Silver) Hannay.

Robert worked at General Motors in Lordstown as an assembler for 25 years, retiring in 1991. He was a former member of Salem Hills Golf Course and loved to do woodworking.

Robert served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman 1st Class, Gunner on LST-281 (Landing Ship Tank) receiving the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Campaign Stars; Normandy and Southern France, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with one Bronze Campaign Star for the Okinawa Invasion, the Philippines Liberation Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal by France.

His wife, Mildred “Millie” Grace (Smith) Hannay, whom he married September 4, 1948 also preceded him in death Monday, October 31, 2016.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley (George) Bodirnea of Villa Rica, GA and Sharon (Charles) Baker of Salem; four grandchildren, Adrienne Russell, Adam (Jessica) Baker, Andrew Baker and Tricia (Dan) Zehentbauer; and three great grandchildren, Landon, Blake and Eli.

A private service will be held with military honors at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to D-Day Ohio Veterans Program, 283 Buffalo St., Conneaut, OH 44030.
