Rodney A. Curry, was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse E. Curry and Jewell H. Curry. Also preceding was a brother, Jesse Moore Curry, and also his only child, Crystal Curry Cash who died in 2004.
After high school he enlisted in the Army. Rodney enjoyed Army life. He was a Staff Sergeant and also became a drill instructor. Rodney often spoke about being in Uncle Sams Army. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Rodney had a canine that followed him everywhere while he was in the Army. He adored Rodney and he was a German Shepherd called Devil.
When he came out of the Army, he went to work in the coal mines, both Island Creek and Peabody. After a period of time in the mines he went to school at the University of Kentucky and graduated. While there in Lexington he worked at Calumet Farm. He also played football at U.K. under the coaching of Frank Curci. During that time they won the Peach Bowl. While at U.K. he met many friends such as former attorney Robert "Bob" Moore, William "Spanky" Forsythe, and Henrey Lackey.
After graduating from U.K. he came back to Western KY. He worked at Island Creek Coal and then at Peabody. He was a surface foreman and used his education as a mechanical and mining engineer. Later we went into business with his friend "Spanky". Their business was American Mining Parts in Pikeville. Later he also built and owned Wildcat Mini Storage in Madisonville which he still operated at the time of his death. He also had rental properties and some billboards.
He was a Kentucky Colonel. Rodney loved all sports, especially anything Kentucky. One of his passions was girls high school basketball teams, especially Hopkins Co. Central Lady Storm. he was the "Voice of the Hopkins Co. Central Girls Basketball". He was the radio announcer for them on 104.9 for over two decades. He loved helping recruit girls to various colleges and universities. One of his goals was to secure scholarships. he also presented a scholarship yearly named after daughter, who has also played high school basketball.
Another thing Rodney enjoyed was being on the committee for the KY/IN All Star Games every summer. He was also coordinator for the Junior All Stars each July.
The "Original Jerry-O Toy Drive" was also dear to Rodney's heart. This past year he was President. This activity gave him tremendous joy helping local children.
