Bob was born May 19, 1928, the son of William Everett and Emma Riesen McBroom. He grew up in Wichita Falls and attended Alamo Elementary, Zundy Junior High School, and graduated from Wichita Falls Senior High School in 1945. He attended the University of Texas receiving a Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1951. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Bob married Mary Louella Kendrick his college sweetheart on December 26, 1950.

After serving in the army at Fort Sill, McBroom began his geological career in Wichita Falls working for Carl T. Anderson and Frank Wood Associates and then became a certified independent geologist in 1961. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and past president of the Southwest Sectional. He was also a past president of North Texas Oil and Gas. He was a member of Texas Alliance of Energy Producers and past president of Oil Information Library of Wichita Falls.

He was a member of the first faculty of John Hirschi High School teaching general science and later English and journalism. McBroom earned his masters degree in English in 1966 at Midwestern State University. He taught at Estacado High School in Lubbock while working on his Doctorate of Philosophy degree at Texas Tech University which was conferred in 1970.

Upon returning to Wichita Falls, McBroom was part of Midwestern State Universitys English department, and he was its first Director of Continuing Education. He retired as an associate professor in 1976 and returned to the oil business. He later taught parttime at MSU as a Professor Emeritus. For several years, he wrote a column on the oil and gas industry of North Texas for the Times Record News.

Inspired by the beauty of the blue lights lining the buildings at Texas Tech University at Christmas, McBroom was instrumental in bringing the idea to MSU inaugurating the Fantasy of Lights.

Involved in his sons interests, McBroom was president of the Summer Youth Musicals at Rider in 1970 and president of the North Texas Tennis Association helping with many tournaments. He was instrumental in the development of Fain Pool chartered in 1960 and he later served a term as president of the Fain Pool Association.

He was a member of Floral Heights United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Stewards in early years and later on the Church Council. He was a loyal member of the Church Choir.

He belonged to the Wichita Falls Country Club and through the years enjoyed tennis and golf. He was a charter member of Cotillion Dance Club and spent summer vacations in Colorado dryfly fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents two brothers, Patrick H. McBroom and William E. McBroom and his son William Kendrick Billy McBroom.
