On December 12, 1949, Swede entered into active service with the United States Army. He served in the Korean War in the 1st Cav Division and received several service medals, including: the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal with three bronze service stars, and the Army Occupation Medal (Jap). Swede loved spending time outdoors in nature. Fishing was always a big passion of his. He also enjoyed feeding the eagles and deer in the area. At one time, he was feeding twenty-one eagles. Swede volunteered weekly at Pin Oak Marsh and enjoyed that time immensely.
