Al was born in Arcata, California on January 1, 1942, to George and Olive Riley. He attended and graduated from Arcata High School.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1962. After discharge from the Army, he enlisted in the National Guard. He served a total of 23 years in the U.S. Army and National Guard.
Al was an avid outdoor sportsman. His fondest memories were the “Big Hunt” in Nevada, and the “Big” trout that didn’t get away. Al also loved riding and collecting motorcycles, and attending motorcycle rallies with his sons in Sturgess, California, and Reno. At one time Al had a collection of 15-20 motorcycles on the back deck. Al also enjoyed painting and restoring cars.
Al married Audrey DeMartin Sutter Brim in Reno, Nevada in 1972. In his own words, he met this loud mouthed broad playing pool in a bar. They were inseparable until her death in 2009. We are not sure if Al knew what he was getting himself into, when he married into a ready made family of four.
In addition to his wife, Audrey, he was preceded in death by his parents: George and Olive Riley; brother, Robert Riley; grandson, Paul Fisher; and great-granddaughter, Jillian Andrew.
Al is survived by his sister, Sharon (Edward) Kaleta; brother, Dennis (Penny) Riley; daughter, Marcia Sutter; sons: Phillip (Kelsey) Sutter, Larry (Roxanne) Sutter, Taras (Luke) Sutter; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren , and great-great-grandchildren.
A Military graveside Service will be held at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise, Idaho on February 21, 2019, at 2pm.
The family would like to thank St Luke’s Home Health, St Luke’s Hospice, and Al’s friends and neighbors for watching out and caring for him in his time of need.
