She was born May 8, 1930 in Bloomington, the daughter of Dr. Perry E. and Evelyn (Fisher) Cotton.
JoAnn was a social worker for the Tipton County Welfare Department for over 25 years and retired in 1995. She was a 1948 graduate of Elwood High School and attended the University of California-Berkeley. She graduated from the Indiana University Business School with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. JoAnn was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church where she was active in and Past-President of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member and Past-President of Tri Kappa Sorority in Elwood; member of A.A.U.W. - the American Association of University Women; and a member and leader in Girl Scouts. She loved gardening, music, art, working crossword puzzles, and playing Bridge. She was also a member of the Elwood Historical Society and enjoyed researching geneology.
Survivors include: 4 Children – John (wife Charmian) Seright of Greensburg, Kay Mueller of Indianapolis, Laura (Kevin) Fewell of Mason, OH, and Amy (husband Tom) Updike of Carmel; 4 Sisters – Marilyn (husband Dallas) Etchison of Bangor, ME, Joyce (husband Earl) Ruby of Carmichael, CA, Alice Knotts of Elwood, and Linda Speer of Elwood; 8 Grandchildren – Josh (wife Evelyn) Walsman, Megan Mueller, Alex Mueller, Barbara Fehn, Tyler Fewell, Maggie Fewell, Shannon Collins, Sean (wife Seeun) Updike; 3 Great-great-grandchildren; Brother-in-Law – Don Hill of Elwood; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: Parents – Dr. Perry E. and Evelyn (Fisher) Cotton; and 2 Sisters – Carol C. Frye and Nancy J. Hill.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church – 1500 North A Street, Elwood with Rev. Chris Dare officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 PM Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood and one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the church.
