Bonnie Lee Green passed from this life into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in her home surrounded by her family on February 7, 2019 in Bryan, Texas. She was 89 years old.
Bonnie was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on January 19, 1930. Her parents were Dr. E.B. and Ruby Strickler. She met her high school sweetheart, Merrill Green, while attending Chickasha High School, home of the Fighting’ Chicks. They were married at The Old Post Chapel at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, while serving in the military.
Bonnie and Merrill devoted their lives to the betterment of young people by teaching and coaching in various communities. Of the 29 years she spent teaching, 17 were spent serving the children in Bryan ISD. Bonnie was “born to teach”. Her students, colleagues, and administrators considered her a gifted teacher. She was one of the first teachers to receive merit pay during the time BISD was recognizing outstanding teachers with monetary rewards largely because of her keen desire to make sure every one of her students felt loved and were able to succeed academically.
In addition to teaching, Bonnie was a devoted wife of a football coach. As his number one cheerleader, she faithfully supported Merrill while he was coaching and will forever be a Bryan Viking.
Much of Bonnie’s life away from teaching involved her family, her love of her church, participating in various Bible studies, and her friendship with the many women who enriched her life through various organizations and activities. These include Community Bible Study, D.A.R., Women’s Club, P.E.O, and her Bridge Club. She became a P.E.O. Golden Girl two days prior to her passing, commemorating fifty years of philanthropic work to support women in the community. As Bonnie battled cancer, she continued to participate in these community service organizations and never stopped believing she would draw a winning hand in Bridge.
Bonnie never passed up an opportunity to serve others out of devotion to her Savior by extending her loving care and acceptance of all. She had a gift for making others feel as if they were part of her family whether they were a relative, fellow church member, or a complete stranger.
Bonnie leaves behind her husband, Merrill Green of Bryan, Texas, three daughters and spouses: Stephane (Dr. Kent) Shellenberger of Bethany, Oklahoma, Jennifer (Dick) Bergland of Georgetown, Texas, and Sylvia (Donna Jones) Franze of Carrolton, Texas, a son-in law James (Debbie) Franze of Stonewall, Texas, and nephew Steve (Kara) Grant of Albuquerque, N.M.. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Scott (Sarah) Shellenberger, Brett Shellenberger, Matt (Madison) Shellenberger, Mallory Bergland, David Bergland, Stephanie (Eric) Tulga, Preston (Amanda) Franze and Madison Franze. Her family will miss her dearly but are rejoicing she is no longer in pain but instead is experiencing the glory of her Lord.
There will be a time of visitation for people to greet the family on Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and a celebration of her life will be Monday, February 11 at 11:00 AM. Both events will take place at the Bryan Church of the Nazarene, 2122 E. William Joel Bryan Parkway. Interment will take place on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
