Educated at Edinburgh University, 1822-25. In 1827, he entered Glasgow Theological Academy in September 1827. Appointed classical tutor in the Blackburn Theological Academy. Studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh but chose to become a minister at Newington independent church in Liverpool. Served as pastor at North College Street Congregational Church in Edinburgh, where he was ordained in 1835. He remained there for more than forty years and was recognized as a powerful preacher. Received D. D. at St. Andrews in 1846. In 1870 he assisted in the revision of the Old Testament. From 1877 to 1881, he was principal of the Theological Hall. In 1884 he became LL.D. of Edinburgh University. He published widely and contributed articles to the Encyclopedia Britannica (8th edition). He died at Pinkieburn House near Musselburgh. His wife was Mary Tod Marsden, a daughter of James Marsden. They had thirteen children. His portrait, which was painted by Norman Macbeth, is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. (Source: DNB)
