MRS. CORA E. TORNQUIST: Mrs. Cora E. Tornquist, 91, Topeka, formerly of Scranton, died Monday, April 9, at a Topeka hospital. Mrs. Tornquist was a nurse at the Methodist Home in Topeka 17 years. She was born April 20, 1892, in Scranton the daughter of Carl and Laura Nicolay Phelon. She grew up in the Asbury community north of Lyndon. She lived in Topeka the past 25 years. Mrs. Tornquist was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church in Topeka and a former member of the Asbury Woman’s Society of Christian Service in the Asbury community, and the Osage County Farm Bureau. She was married to Elmer Tornquist in November 1914, near Scranton. He died in August 1947. Survivors include a son, Carl Tornquist, rural Scranton; a brother, Alvah Phelon, Topeka; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Lyndon. Burial will be in Scranton Cemetery. Mrs. Tornquist will lie in state from 6 p.m. today until 9 p.m. Wednesday at Feltner Funeral Home, Lyndon, and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. 10 Apr 1984 Topeka Capital Journal
