He is survived by his ex-wives, Angela and Judy, his daughters, Cynthia Denise Holden Lloyd and Nicole Rush; his four grandchildren (in order of birth), Heather Katherine Eastin (nee Holden), Danny R. Holden, Jr. (often referred to as simply DJ), Alex and Ashton Rush. He is further survived by his sister Bonnie Stuart, his brother James Smith and his youngest sister, Lila Ware; and finally his son-in-law, Clay Lloyd.
He is beloved by family and friends. He was a nature lover and preferred being outdoors, he was an artist, a fisherman, a baseball fan and loved gardening. He will always be remembered for his intelligence and wit.
He died peacefully, but suddenly, at his daughter's home, in Douglasville, Georgia. His memorial service was held in Charlotte, North Carolina and his ashes were given to his family.
