Virgil was born October 10, 1923, to Oscar and Adella Bergene. He has lived, except for his first 5 years, on the farm where he still lives. He attended school at the Adams Public School. He graduated in 1941. While there he played tuba in the State FFA Band.

In 1946, he married Mavis Mathiason. They have 6 children: Sandra Berndt, Kent Bergene, Julie Schmitz, Amy Underdahl Kerry Stroup, and Kristin Bergene. They have 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Except Kent, all live close enough so they can have Sunday dinner together. Kent lives in the Chicago area.
