John Maple was born about 1770 in Middlesex County, New Jersey. He married Mary Elizabeth Moody about 1797 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Around 1806 they came to what is now Center Township, Carroll County, Ohio, and in 1816 John patented 160 acres about 3 miles east of where Carrollton is now located.

In John's will, dated 20 September 1846, John left his farm to his son David. Also mentioned in the will were sons Jacob (living in PA), William, John and Henry, and daughters Phoebe, Nancy McClosky, Mary Cope, Jane Potts, Rebecca Pugh (deceased), Susan Marshall and Elizabeth Marshall (deceased).
