Raymond D. Sams, 86, of Lancaster passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019 at Willow Valley Communities after a long battle with Leukemia.

He was born in Phoenixville, Pa to Joseph and Barbara (Hallman) Sams on October 28, 1932. He was married to Doris (Richter) Sams for nearly 62 years. Ray was an army veteran, graduate of Grove City College, and became a licensed professional engineer. He started his career in Lancaster at Hamilton Watch and Lancaster General Hospital before moving back to the Phoenixville area and working at various companies including Merck, Betz Environmental, the PQ Corporation, and Consulting Engineers Inc. where he was a Forensic Engineer. Ray and Doris moved to Willow Valley Communities in 2013.

Ray was an avid pilot, designed and built two of his own homes, and enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities. He and his wife had a lakeside cottage in Canada that he redesigned and enjoyed for many years with family and friends. Ray was an avid supporter of his wife's stone sculpting and other art mediums. Ray had a love of reading and learning about various subjects and people and translated that love into tutoring at a Lancaster City elementary school in his retirement.

In addition to his wife Doris, he is survived by two sons, Craig D. husband of Christine Colby, Bryan S. husband of Linda (Prettyman); four grandchildren, Mark, Jessica, Melissa, and Michelle; and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Fred and Russell.

A celebration of life will take place at Willow Valley Communities, Manor Building, Lancaster, on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 2 PM.
