Land Office Head, Surveyor and Developer. William S. Edsall for a half century was a leading citizen of Fort Wayne Indiana's early development. Having began his working career as a surveyor with the U.S. Engineers, he was responsible for surveying a route for the Wabash and Erie Canal. In 1840, he became a member of Fort Wayne Indiana's first common council and head of the U.S. Land Office in 1843. He and his brother, Samuel Edsall, and Judge Samuel Hanna formed a company, building the Fort Wayne-Bluffton plank road.
