Obituary:

Mr. Phillip Eugene Burt, 77, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2013 peacefully and surrounded by family. Phil was born in Baltimore, MD on March 8, 1936 to the late Obie C. Burt and Leah V. Crews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Burt and Obie Burt and survived by one sister, Patricia Ariail and husband Bob of Columbia, SC. Phil is survived by his wife of 32 years, Shirley Q. Burt. He was a proud "Pop" to his three daughters, Deborah Garrett of Charlotte, NC, Kathryn McWhirter and husband Paul of Houston, TX, Michelle Keech and husband John of Raleigh, NC; and one stepson, Steve Wall and wife Karen of Stokesdale, NC. He was known as "Pawpaw" to five grandchildren he dearly loved, Ethan Garrett, Taylor McWhirter, Ryan Wall, Alex Wall, and Avery Keech. He is also survived by one niece, Pam Schifflett; and two nephews, Lance Burt and Wynn Burt. After growing up in Baltimore, Phil moved to the Triad area and attended NC State University. He was a life-long engineer and retired from RJR Tobacco Company in 1994. He also worked in the real estate market for a number of years in Fancy Gap, VA. As a servant leader, Phil served as a Hospice volunteer and member of the SW Virginia Disaster Relief Team. He was always ready to help. Phil and Shirley spent the summers in Winston-Salem and thoroughly enjoyed the winters living in Clermont, FL surrounded by a host of friends. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, tinkering with his '61 Fiat, walking a "piece of land" and working in the yard. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at his home church of Robinhood Road Baptist Church in Winston-Salem on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Western NC Alzheimer's Association, 4615 Dundas Dr., Suite 103, Greensboro, NC 27407 or alz.org/northcarolina.
