PORTER- Robert Francis Smalley Sr., age 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 3, 2019, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Middleboro, MA, the son of Francis and Pat (Griswald) Smalley and graduated from Bourne High School in MA.
Robert proudly served his country in the US Army in the Korean War. Staff Sergeant Smalley arrived in Korea in July of 1952 and served eight months and three weeks with Baker Company, 1st Platoon, Tank 12, 73rd Tank Battalion.
In 1954 he was hired by the Army Corps of Engineers, then in 1970 he was promoted to work as a Marine Traffic Controller at the Cape Cod Canal.
He enjoyed woodworking, shooting, hunting, the outdoors, growing blueberries and gardening.
He was also active in veterans’ organizations including the American Legion in Porter, VFW, and DAV.
He is predeceased by his first wife Dorene Smalley in 2002.
Robert is survived by his wife- Karen E. (White) Smalley; children- Bob Smalley Jr. and his wife Barbara, Jeff Smalley and his wife Sandra, and Diana Smalley, all of Porter; grandchildren- Zachary, Jessica, Patrick, and Jacob; and great grandchildren- Madison and Jackson.
Burial will be announced and held in the spring at the Smalley Family Cemetery in Porter with US Army Honors.
