Mavis Bookham’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Wyalkatchem residents has won her the title of Mid-West Senior of the Year.

Seniors’ Minister Sheila McHale today commended Mavis’s outstanding contribution to the local community, saying it was a positive role model for all generations.

“Mavis, whose voluntary community work started in her teenage years, has dedicated more than 65 years to helping others,” Ms McHale said.

“She has been an active member of the Country Women’s Association since 1949, supported the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation and is current president of the Senior Leisure Group.

“Affectionately known as ‘Mrs Bookie’, she has won the respect and hearts of Wyalkatchem citizens for her untiring work in the community.

“A truly remarkable woman, Mavis is very deserving of this award which acknowledges her incredible energy and dedication to actively promoting and supporting the Wyalkatchem community.”

As Mid-West Senior of the Year, Mavis received a trophy and $250 prize money, presented by member for Geraldton Shane Hill MLA and City of Geraldton Mayor Vickie Petersen today in a small ceremony at the Geraldton Civic Centre.

She will compete for the BankWest Senior of the Year Award, which will be announced at a gala ceremony in Perth on October 27. The BankWest Senior of the Year receives a trophy and $500 prize money, plus a return airfare from Perth to Exmouth with five nights all inclusive accommodation at Ningaloo Reef Retreat and car hire, compliments of Sky West airlines, Budget and the Western Australian Tourism Commission.
