He was born September 26, 1931 in East McKeesport, PA, the son of the late John D. McGahan and Maude (McKinley) McGahan.
He earned a degree from Ohio Northern University and later degrees from the Naval Post Graduate School and George Washington University. His twenty-year military career in the Navy included assignments in Maine, Puerto Rico, California, Hawaii, and Washington DC. His civilian career included serving as a project manager at the National Bureau of Standards and as an engineer/logistician for a Washington area consulting firm.
After moving to Hershey in 2000, he volunteered at the Hershey Medical Center and was an active member of the Derry Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by Janie, his wife of 52 years in August 2008. Surviving are his two sons John Perry McGahan, Jr. of Minneapolis, MN; Bryan Alan McGahan and his wife Diane of Red Lion; his daughter Amy Diane Schwarz and her husband Shawn of Woodstock, GA; his sister Diane Graves and her husband Michael of Golden CO; and twelve dearly loved grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Derry Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 2, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation following. Interment will be at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
