Frank Douglas Barnes was born November 13, 1854 in Nunda township, McHenry County, Illinois to Walter Balfour Barnes and Levia Pauline Beckley.

His father was a wounded Civil War veteran, who fought for the Union Army. Frank's mother, Levia Pauline Beckley was Walter's 1st wife. Walter and Levia were 1st cousins, with their common grandparents being Thomas Barnes (Rev. War soldier, #65362993) and Phebe Langdon (#79248915), daughter of Capt. Daniel Langdon (or Langton, #68197671) of the Revolutionary War. Levia's father was Gordon Lewis Beckley (#50513708), veteran of the War of 1812. Gordon's father was Dr. Daniel Beckley M.D. (#64930331), who had served in the Revolutionary War and afterwards moved to Utica, NY and became a physician there. Walter's mother was Julia Moore (#50506505), daughter of Shadrach Moore, Jr (Rev. War soldier, #30233895). All of Frank's ancestry came from early settlers and founders of towns in Connecticut. Thomas Barnes, the immigrant ancestor from Barking, Essex, England was one of the original proprietors of Hartford, Ct and was Frank's 4th great-grandfather.

Frank married Viola Marie Mourn-Barnes-Jewell, daughter of George Washington Mourn and Mary Frances Smith-Mourn and had several children. I have them listed as: Flossie Elvina (my great-grandmother), Clara M., Walter Raymond, Clarence Arthur, Bessie A., George C. and Levia F. Barnes.

Frank was a successful farmer and Sunday school teacher. In 1914 he became terribly distraught about his son, Clarence's marital difficulties and subsequent separation from his wife. He died as a result of a self-inflicted shotgun discharge to the stomach, presumably due to the emotional turmoil he was suffering. He was much beloved by his community, which was in shock after his death.

Thanks to Judy Mayfield for creating this memorial page and also to Darren McMannis from the Harvey County Genealogical Society for the information concerning Frank's death and for the grave photo.
