Nellie C. Philbrook
Beauty operator, great-grandmother, 97
Apr 5, 2018

On April 6, 1920, Nellie came into this world with nothing; but on Feb. 16, 2018, at the age of 97, she left this world with Salvation, sinlessness and by the hand of Jesus her Savior to a home that the Creator Himself has prepared for her (John 14:1-3).

Nellie was born near Driggs, Idaho, and lived in California since 1938, and many years in the Hi-Desert.

She worked as a beauty operator and met her husband, Jay, in 1942. They had two sons, Rick and James, who ultimately became families with eight children and nine grandchildren.

Nellie joined the residents of Braswell Family Senior Care in November of 2011, always cheerful and sharing times with her fellow dwellers and staff.

In life she enjoyed playing the keyboard and tambourine, was proud to whistle by inhaling, speaking a little pig Latin, liked drawing Betty Boop and cherished her family visits with the love they shared.

Her son James and his wife, Judi, would visit weekly, adding cheer and holiday decor to her room to let her know that she was loved. Family and friends would come and celebrate birthdays in the dining hall with gifts and cake and a lot of love!

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send a contribution in Nellie's name to Braswell's Family Senior Care, 55425 Santa Fe Trail, Yucca Valley, CA 92284 with a notation, "Nellie's Fund," on the check, which will be divided among the caregivers who loved and helped Nellie so much.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Philbrook, all but one of her brothers and sisters as well as her uncle Otto Harbach, the songwriter of such tunes as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Rose Marie" and others.

Surviving family is her brother Paul Harbach, 103 years young, of Laguna Beach; sons and daughters-in-love, Rick and Lila Philbrook and Pastor James and Judi Philbrook; grandchildren Robert, Andrea, Crystal, Vicky, Kayla, Kim, Tiffany and Kristie; great-grandchildren Trevor, Ashlie, Kelvin, Ryan, Ethan, Lauren, Bela, Michael and Arabella.

A celebration of life service, officiated by Pastor James C. Philbrook, will be at 11 a.m. April 6 at Mountain Top Fellowship Church in Silent Valley Club in the VCAR Hall with a luncheon to follow. Silent Valley Club is at 46305 Poppet Flats Road, Banning, CA 92229. Take the I-10 freeway to Banning, exit Hargrave Street, turn left (south) and follow the signs to Idyllwild 243. Turn down Poppet Flats Road on the right and turn left into the park. It's about 15 minutes from the freeway. Please let the ranger at the gate know that you are there for the service.
