Christopher Michael "Mike" Hicks, 60, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019, in Canon City, Co.
There will be a viewing at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service celebration of Chris' purpose driven life will be held at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at General Douglas L. McBride Veterans Cemetery.
On August 25, 1958, Christopher Michael "Mike" Hicks was born in Denver, Colorado, to Walter F. Hicks, Sr. and Wilma J. Sanders. He graduated from Roswell High School in 1978, and soon after, he enlisted in The United States Army. Chris served his country in combat by completing two wars during his service, Desert Storm and The Iraq War, of which he returned home safely from both.
During his service in United States Army, Chris was promoted to his highest rank of SSG (Staff Sergeant). He served as a light wheel mechanic and as a recruiter in the United States Army. Chris received multiple honors such as Army Commendation Medal (2nd award), Army Good Conduct Medal (5th award), National Defense Service Medal award (2nd award), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Southwest Asia Service Medal. Mike served twenty-two years in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on June 30, 2006.
Chris worked for New Mexico Youth Challenge, where he worked with at-risk youth, mentoring and assisting them in obtaining a fresh start. He later attended Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell (ENMU-R) to get his degree in HVAC. Chris then went into truck driving doing over-the-road and dedicated routes for Werner Trucking. He was a faithful member of New Life Apostolic Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Emanuel Norfor, where he served as a deacon on the deacon board until Pastor Norfor's passing in 2011. Chris loved woodworking and barbequing. He was known for his famous smoked ribs, briskets, and turkeys. It was a proven fact that once you tasted his barbeque, you would definitely want more.
His smile would light up a room and warm your heart all at the same time. The bear hugs were the best because he knew how to show love. Chris enjoyed a good football game, even more, if his favorite team, the "Dallas Cowboys", were playing. He also enjoyed watching wrestling as well as the discovery channel because he was forever learning something new.
