David Lester Carter Jr. was born on his parents' farm near Tarkington Prairie, Texas, in 1922. He lived on that same farm until his death in 2019. He had stated for many years that he wished to die on the same farm on which he was born - and he did.

After graduation from high school, he joined the merchant marine as an armed guard aboard U.S. merchant ships during World War II. He served three years and two months, and traveled to such places as Australia, England, and China. He said the most scared he was in the navy occurred when the Liberty ship on which he was serving neared England, and all hands were called on deck to put on life jackets. The Liberty ship had sprung a leak along one of the seams. If the inrushing water could not be stopped, all would have to abandon ship. He said they were eventually able to make port and did not have to abandon ship. (Liberty ships were mass produced, prefabricated cargo ships made during World War II. Some of the early Liberty ships had poor welding. Some ships came apart and sank in the middle of the cold Atlantic. David Carter was fortunate that his ship made port.)

After honorable discharge, he married the love of his life, a girl he had met in algebra class in high school: Lennie "Lynn" Stone. They were married July 5, 1947. On the day of his death, they had been married 71 years, six months, and twenty-seven days. To this union were added two daughters, Connie Darlene Ede with husband Jim Ede and step-granddaughter Jamie Sue Ede, and Sandra Jean Perryman with husband Tom Perryman, grandson Stephen Hazen with wife Pamela Hazen, and great grandchildren Carter Hazen and Vivian Hazen. He is survived by all of these family members, and also survived by his wife Lennie "Lynn" Carter and sister Geroline "Gerry" Wood. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lester David Carter and Ollie Carter, and a great granddaughter, Audrey Aliza Hazen (born and died Jan 31, 2017).

David Carter worked many years for Hughes Tools in Houston, and then took a job with the Texas Highway Department. He retired in 1986. He also farmed the land on which he and his wife lived.

Mr. & Mrs. Carter are lifetime members of the Church of Christ, Tarkington Prairie, Texas.

Funeral services are Wednesday, February 6, at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas. The viewing is at 10:00 am, services at 11:00 am, with graveside services to follow. Afterward there is a reception at their home church, the Church of Christ in Tarkington Prairie.
