Quetcha Ámay was a Native American born at ranchería Pleyto in what is now Monterey County. He was about 18 years old when he assumed his Christian name, León María (no surname), upon his baptism at Mission San Antonio de Padua on June 28, 1794 (SAP Baptism 02063). Fr. Buenaventura Sitjar noted that he was "near death" (peligro de muerte) at the time of his baptism. He survived and married neophyte Damiana Maria Palmer at Mission San Antonio de Padua on September 26, 1796 (SAP Marriage 00438). León died at Mission San Antonio and was buried in the mission cemetery on March 22, 1798 (SAP Death 01060). After his death Damiana married (2) widowed master blacksmith Pablo Antonio Ciprián y Gómez at Mission San Antonio de Padua on May 20, 1798 (SAP Marriage 00493).
