Irvin D. May, 84, of Yankton, S.D., died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with the Rev. Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton with military honors by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post 791 of Yankton and SDARNG Honor Guard of Sioux Falls. Visitation begins one hour before the funeral.

Irvin Dale May was born July 28, 1929, in Verdel to Walter and Hannah (Hagen) May. He attended country school at District 109 in Knox County and then graduated from Niobrara High School in 1946. Following school, Irvin helped farm with his relatives in Knox County, worked on the railroad in Columbus and then the coal mines in Wyoming. For one season, he also followed and helped with the wheat harvest.

In 1951, Irvin joined the United States Navy and served four years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex. Many great memories and lifelong friends were made during this time.

On Aug. 10, 1953, Irvin married Phyllis Sawyer at Bremerton, Wash. As a result of his training in the Navy, Irvin was employed at Agnew State Hospital in San Jose, Calif. He retired in 1982 as the chief of plant operations after 30 years of service. Irvin and Phyllis then moved to Yankton where they enjoyed their retirement years together.

Irvin’s hobbies were many and varied greatly. He loved woodworking, which included making many different kinds of clocks. He also loved gardening and working with the flowers, vegetables and lawn. Irvin enjoyed fishing, quilting, spending time with his friends and neighbors, keeping in touch with his Navy buddies and following his favorite football team, the San Francisco 49ers.

Thankful for having shared in his life are his wife, Phyllis May of Yankton; two children, Charlene (Bruce) Saunders of Bakersfield, Calif., and Chris (Ellen) May of Grand Island; six grandchildren, Julia and Michelle Saunders, Kimberly (Steve) deJong, Andrew, Andrea and Nicholas May; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Irvin was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Amanda May and two brothers, Glen and Ronald May.
