According to census records Edward was enumerated with his family in 1860 at his hometown of Jamaica, Vermont. His father, David, was a teamster at the time. By the 1865 state census of Massachusetts David Ball had moved his family here to Warwick where he began farming. The move was most assuredly prompted by the death of his father in early 1865. His seventy-nine-year-old widowed mother, Elizabeth, and his sister, Sarah N. Ball, 38, were recorded in his household by the census taker.

Edward, 11, was listed in the 1870 census of Warwick but unfortunately, after that, it's not until 1910 that he could be located again. The fifty-one-year old was boarding with shoe store merchants Henry Broadhurst, 53, and his son Ralph, 22, at their Denver, Colorado apartment located at 1322 East Colfax Avenue. Edward's occupation was recorded as a manufacturer of sewer pipe and brick. He reportedly had never married.

Mr. Ball once again could not be located in the once-a-decade census - this time the year was 1920. From his passport application from 1921, mentioned just below, Edward entered Denver as his location at the time. On the back off the application he had listed Hotel Belmont, New York, NY as the address he wanted his approved passport to be mailed to but that address was crossed out. When he returned from a trip in September of 1921 his residence recorded on the ship manifest was the Denver Athletic Club, Denver, Colorado. The 1930 census placed him at the same club.

Edward's vacations found in FamilySearch.org/search records:

On Edward's passport application from July of 1921, where his signed picture added to this memorial was found, it looks like he planned a vacation to Great Britain, France, Belgium, Italy and Spain that month.

It looks like he did go! A return trip aboard the S. S. Scythia was found. It departed Liverpool, England 9/21/1921 and arrived at New York, NY on 9/30/1921. His address was listed as 1325 Glenarson St., Denver, CO but it should be 1325 Glenarm Place (the Denver Athletic Club).

Return trip aboard the S. S. Amer. Heredia. United Fruit Co. from Havana, Cuba 2/16/1929 to New Orleans, LA 2/18/1929. Address: Denver Athletic Club, Denver, CO.
