Age 84, of Glorieta, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2004, following a brief illness.
Josie was born July 13, 1919 in Las Vegas, NM. She married Guillermo (Willie) Varela, Jr. in Pecos, NM on July 9, 1948. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guillermo (Willie) Varela Jr.; baby daughter Roseanne; parents: Evaristo and Luz Lucero; sisters: Frances Chavez, Sophie Sanchez and Della Linson and brother Jake Lucero.
She is survived by her sister, Lucy M. Lucero; sister-in-law, Imelda Vigil and husband Isidoro; brothers-in-law: Frank Varela, Cipriano Varela and wife Claudia; daughters: Ramona Varela, Maria Varela, Theresa Varela, Helen Tafoya and husband Albert, and Elizabeth and husband Jose Santamaria; sons: Martin and wife Francisca, Gene and wife Yvette, Guillermo (Billy) and wife Mildred, David and wife Gloria; grandchildren: Jacobo and Sofia Varela, Eugenio and wife Celina, Francisco Varela, Felice Haygood, Carmela and Elisa DeVargas, Ranada Quintana, Gabriel, Adan and Enrique Varela, and Jesus and Ambrosio Tafoya; great-grandchildren: Amber and Diego Varela.
Serving as pallbearers will be Eugenio Varela, Jacobo Varela, Francisco Varela, Gabriel Varela, Jesus Tafoya and Adan Varela. Honorary pallbearers will be Felice Haygood, Sofia Varela, Carmela DeVargas, Elisa DeVargas, Ranada Quintana and Ambrosio Tafoya.
Interment will follow at Pecos Cemetery.
